Chapter 10

The red and blue swirling lights brought Avery’s neighbors to their porches like moths to a light. Leo pulled up and parked her car, looking desperately for Avery as she got out. She didn’t see him outside and ran to the house, but was stopped by someone with a Grand Rapids Police Department badge. She recognized the face. It was Silvia Peterson, from the hospital.

“Ma’am, this is an active crime scene,” she said with her hand on Leo’s arm. Her eyes flickered in recognition. Someone with a camera milled about in the background, flashing photos of the ground.

“I know, I was here,” she shook off Silvia’s hand and ran inside. Avery was sitting on the couch, a policeman standing opposite him with a clipboard. She shouted his name and he looked up, moving quickly to close the space between them. She collided into his arms and he enveloped her in a hug like she was as natural to him as breathing.

“Hey,” she said, pulling back and taking his face in her hands. His eyes were red. “Lucy’ll be fine. She was shot in the back, but it missed her spine and the vet says it’s an easy fix. She’s in surgery now.” He hugged her again, this time harder before the cop interrupted.

“You’re Ms. Calloway?”

“Doctor,” she corrected him. He grimaced. She sensed that he didn’t appreciate the correction.

“We’re going to need your statement,” he said curtly. Silvia appeared at his side, saying something quietly to him.

“Excuse me,” he said, stepping away to talk with Silvia. Leo didn’t need to see them look her way to know what they were talking about. She prepared herself for questions about the bike accident.

“Calloway,” Avery said, pulling her attention back towards him. He held up a blanket and put it over her shoulders. She realized that she was still in a wet tank top and soaked jeans, the blue outline of her bra showcasing how little she had on. Avery had put on a dry shirt. Which she had gotten wet again when she lunged into his arms, like an idiot. He adjusted the blanket hanging on her.

“Thank you,” he said. She could only nod in response, the deep sincerity in his eyes pulling at her guilt. She knew, even if he didn’t, that she was the reason for this.

The officer returned, clearing his throat to get their attention.

“Ma’am, I need to speak to you privately.” She gave Avery’s hand a reassuring squeeze and stepped away with the policeman. “Can you tell me what happened, ma’am?”

“We were on the couch and someone threw a brick through the window. Avery ran out and Lucy followed him. When I was running after him I heard a gunshot, and when I found him he was on the sidewalk with Lucy.”

“What vet did you bring it to?” he asked. His use of the neutral pronoun bothered her.

"On Michigan Street, a 24-hour vet."

“Did it die?”

“No, she’ll be fine,” Leo responded.

“Did you get hurt?”

“No.”

“Can you tell me about the
